THE DAPPER AFRIKA EXPERIENCE X DREAMS ON AIR
This past week, my friend and I got the opportunity to attend the live Dapper Afrika Fashion Experience hosted in SOHO at Dreams on Air. From the name, I expected that the event had something to do with African fabric. Yet, being that I'm not from the area, I didn't have a clue as to what I was about to experience in the 2 hour span that I was there.
Dapper Afrika is not only a fashion icon, he's a creative director, wardrobe stylist, songwriter and recording artist. He shared his story with us briefly about being homeless and using his love for creating to bring him out of his situation. It was so inspirational, especially being that I just moved to the city to create. He gave me, and I'm sure everyone else who attended the experience, hope! To be honest, he is the true definition of Drakes 2013 anthem "Started From the Bottom Now We Here!" Never thought someone could hold so many hats and actually be good at them all, right? Yeah, well this night we got the chance to experience him in his element and he killed it!
When we first landed on Wooster St., in search of the showroom, I couldn't help but notice the fine dressed melanin creatures walking all in the same direction. Instead of looking lost, we followed the crowd in hopes that they would lead us to the event. Now, I cant like, after seeing the fashions, we were slightly nervous because we felt as if we were underdressed. However, once we arrived to the door, we were greeted with a warm smile, open arms and our favorite tunes by dj XXX. Once we got inside the showroom, we were amazed with all the unique threads, shoes and accessories that laced the walls. While browsing around, I fell in love with brands that I never heard of such as: SAKU, ANDREEVA and V & R by FDL. After browsing around, we got some libations and a cupcake and parked it up front while we vibed to the music and waited for the show to commence.
The show started out with a song led by Mr. Dapper Afrika himself. His voice was so calming and majestic along with the backup singers who accompanied him. Then, we were greeted by Bre Scullark, a teal hair, melanin goddess dressed in an amazing ensemble, who served as the host for the evening. She got the crowd hype and filled with even more positive vibes and we went into the show. As Dapper Afrika continued to sing, the models began to come center stage draped in fashions styled by the man himself. My favorite model by far would have to be the youngest beauty. Her name was Madison, but you may know her as Red Lil Missy on IG. She was filled with so much swag and energy! Also, it was her birthday (leo sistah) so that made me love her even more.
Overall, the event was super dope. I left feeling inspired not only for my brand, but on a creative level! My friend and I were able to network and meet so many cool individuals that night! I'm glad we got the opportunity to attend and I look forward to the next one!
