Chanel Murphy

According to Bloomberg in 2014, out of 403,000 people employed as chefs or head cooks in the U.S., only 21.5 percent are women. While things have progressed and more women have taken the title as head chef in some of the top restaurants in the United States, there is still more work to be done! The #endorsedbykrys feature of the month has definitely taken on that challenge and has begun to make a name for herself in the culinary field. Chanel Murphy, owner of My Fabulous Food, is a self-taught chef located in Charlotte, North Carolina. While her favorite dish to cook is shrimp fettuccine Alfredo, she is skilled in all areas of the kitchen. She has been featured in Essence Magazines online #EssenceEats and food blogs such as Food Beast. Chanel Murphy is definitely making moves in the culinary field and the best is yet to come!

When did you first realize you were passionate about becoming an entrepreneur/cook?  I realized I wanted to be an entrepreneur from a young age.  When I was in second grade, I wanted to own a clothing line and design.  I used to sketch images of my designs.  In 2012, I took my first steps to become an entrepreneur and started an online jewelry boutique named All Things Fabulous. While I do love fashion, I love food just as much. I began to cook during college and I decided to stick with the word fabulous and use it in my blogs name.  My Fabulous Food was created simply just to post my food pictures. I never thought about turning it into a business until recently.

Who is your cooking inspiration, and why?  I love Chrissy Teigen and Ayesha Curry.  They are both avid foodies who love to cook, and they are not professionally trained.  I can relate to them a lot because I am self-taught.  Additionally, they are both beautiful women who have thriving food businesses.

What are your top 3 favorite dishes to make?  I love making Spanish paella, quiche, and seafood boils.

What would you say is one of your biggest accomplishments to date?  My largest accomplishment is having the confidence to do what I love and turn it into a profitable business.  The response has been amazing and my business is constantly growing.

What are the current projects that you are working on?  Currently, I am working on recipe creation for a major magazine!   Also, I plan to release an online cook book, teach live cooking demonstrations, finalize my catering menu, and have my cooking oils sold in gourmet grocery stores.

What should every beginner chef have in their kitchen? Every beginner should have a quality cast iron pan in their kitchen. These pans last for decades, do not contain harmful chemical coatings, are easy to transport from the stove top to the oven and fortify your food with iron.

" drive and competitiveness with myself pushes me to learn from my mistakes"

How would you describe your personal style?  I love simplicity with a dash of glamour.  I love quality fabrics and an androgynous style at times.

Who inspires your style?  Celebrity-wise, I love Kanye West.  Additionally, I love fashion bloggers Karla Deras and Micah Giannelli.

What is your favorite staple piece?  My favorite staple piece is currently an oversized, boyfriend-fit camel coat from Banana Republic.  I love it!

What is the last clothing item you purchased?  The last clothing item I purchased was a sequin dress from a local mobile boutique, The Pink Culture Truck. The dress is so amazing, and I cannot wait to wear it.

Cooking is like: love.
